Champagne è un progetto fotografico realizzato da Roberto Gessi nella casa dei suoi nonni durante la primavera del 2020, nei mesi di lockdown imposti dalla pandemia di Covid-19. In un tempo sospeso, segnato dall’isolamento e dalla ridefinizione degli spazi domestici, l’autore si confronta con un ambiente rimasto intatto dopo la scomparsa dei suoi abitanti, avvenuta tra il 2017 e il 2019.

Le immagini esplorano il rapporto tra presenza e assenza, fissando nel tempo stanze ormai vuote e oggetti d’uso comune privati della loro funzione. Con la morte dei nonni, anche gli oggetti sembrano aver perso significato: utensili, mobili e suppellettili si caricano di una nuova valenza, diventando testimoni di un passato cristallizzato.

L’architettura degli spazi e i dettagli degli interni rievocano un’estetica tipica dell’Italia settentrionale, caratterizzata da materiali, arredi e colori propri di un gusto diffuso tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta. Oggetti semplici, riconoscibili, che rendono l’esperienza visiva familiare e, al tempo stesso, evocano un senso di distacco e malinconia.

Champagne is a photography project by Roberto Gessi, created in the spring of 2020 in his grandparents’ home during the lockdown imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a time of isolation and redefined domestic spaces, the author engages with an environment left untouched after the passing of its inhabitants between 2017 and 2019.

The images explore the relationship between presence and absence, capturing rooms now empty and everyday objects deprived of their function. With the death of their owners, these objects seem to have lost meaning as well—utensils, furniture, and ornaments take on a new significance, becoming silent witnesses of a crystallized past.

The architecture of the spaces and the details of the interiors recall a distinct aesthetic of Northern Italy, defined by materials, furnishings, and colors typical of the 1980s and early 1990s. Simple, recognizable objects that make the visual experience familiar while evoking a sense of detachment and melancholy.
